How do I optimize my website's content for AI search?

Write the direct answer first, in plain language, in the first two or three sentences of the section that covers it — then back it up with a specific number, a named source, or a real example. That single habit, repeated across a page, is the closest thing to a universal rule that the current research on AI search actually supports. Everything else is closer to a strong tendency than a guarantee.

What this means

AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews don't read your page the way a person does, scanning top to bottom for the gist. They break a query into sub-questions, pull passages from multiple pages that answer each piece, and stitch the results into one response. That means the unit of competition isn't your whole page anymore — it's the individual paragraph or sentence that answers one specific sub-question clearly enough to extract.

Google's own Search Central documentation is direct about this: there's no special AI markup, no separate AI index, and no extra technical requirement to appear in AI Overviews beyond the standard SEO fundamentals a page already needs to rank normally (Google, 2025). The differentiator isn't a hidden checklist — it's whether a given passage is confident, specific, and easy to lift out of context cleanly.

Who this applies to

Any business publishing content meant to answer real customer questions — service pages, FAQs, comparison pages, how-to content — benefits from this. It matters most for businesses in categories where people ask AI engines open-ended questions before they ask for a name: "what should I look for in," "how do I know if I need," "what's the difference between." If your content already reads like a brochure instead of an answer, that's usually the biggest gap to close first.

How we'd evaluate it

An audit starts by pulling the actual questions your prospective customers are typing into AI engines and search, then checking whether any single passage on your site answers each one directly within the first sentence or two. We look at whether claims are backed by a specific number, source, or example rather than hedged language, whether the page is technically crawlable and indexed at all, and whether the content is recent enough that an engine has reason to trust it's still accurate. We also check how the same topic is covered by competitors already earning citations, to see what specifically they're doing that your page isn't.

Benefits, limitations, and tradeoffs

The benefit of this approach is that it improves normal SEO too — clear, well-evidenced, well-structured writing tends to perform better in classic search as well as in AI answers, since both systems reward genuinely useful content. The limitation is that none of this guarantees a citation. AI engines are third-party systems that don't publish their exact selection criteria, that criteria changes without notice, and a page can do everything right and still not get picked for a given answer on a given day. Be skeptical of anyone who promises otherwise.

What we know about what actually moves the needle

The most rigorous evidence here comes from a 2024 study by researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech, and IIT Delhi that coined the term "Generative Engine Optimization" (GEO). Testing nine content-level tactics across roughly 10,000 real queries, they found that adding cited statistics and quotations from authoritative sources produced the largest measured gains — boosting a page's visibility in AI-generated answers by up to 40% in some domains, while tactics like keyword stuffing showed little to no benefit (Aggarwal et al., 2024).

Separately, an Ahrefs analysis of ChatGPT's 1,000 most-cited pages in September 2025 found that cited pages skewed toward content that had been recently published or updated — roughly 90% of pages with detectable freshness data had been modified within the current year — and that citations concentrated on pages from domains with an established organic search presence, even though the specific cited page itself often had modest individual authority (Linehan, 2025). Together, the two studies point the same direction: specific, sourced, current writing outperforms generic, hedged, stale writing, regardless of which engine is doing the reading.

Next steps

Pick your three highest-value pages and check the opening two sentences of each major section against one test: could someone lift that passage out and quote it as a complete, accurate answer on its own? If not, that's the rewrite. Add one real statistic or named source to each section that's currently just an assertion, and set a six-to-twelve-month reminder to revisit the page rather than letting it go stale.

Orlando considerations

For Central Florida service businesses — med spas, dental practices, law firms, contractors — the AI-search questions people ask are often more specific than a Google search would be: "what's a fair price for X in Orlando" or "how do I know if a med spa is legitimate." Content written to answer that exact phrasing, with real specifics rather than generic marketing language, has a much better shot at being the passage an AI engine pulls from than a page that only lists services.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need llms.txt or special AI markup to optimize for AI search?

No. Google's own Search Central documentation states there are no additional technical requirements, no special schema, and no separate AI index for its AI features — the same page-experience and content-quality signals that support organic ranking are what AI features draw from.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No, it layers on top of it. The 2024 research that coined the term Generative Engine Optimization tested writing-level changes — like adding statistics and citing sources — on content that was already technically indexable. If a page isn't crawlable and well-structured to begin with, there's nothing for an AI engine to read in the first place.

How is this different from ranking on page one of Google?

A page-one ranking means Google judged your page relevant enough to list. An AI citation means a language model judged a specific passage confident and extractable enough to quote or paraphrase. A page can do well at one and poorly at the other, because the two systems are evaluating different things at different levels of the page.

How long does it take to see a change in AI citations?

There's no fixed timeline, and no one — including AnswerFoundry — can guarantee one. Industry citation-tracking studies have found a strong recency bias in what gets cited, so freshly published or recently updated pages tend to show up faster than untouched older content, but re-crawl and re-weighting schedules vary by engine and aren't published.
