Does my business need to be on Yelp to show up in AI search?
For most local service businesses, yes — not because Yelp is special to you, but because it is special to the AI engines. When someone asks Perplexity or Google AI Mode for "the best plumber near me," the source those engines link to more than any other local directory is Yelp, by a wide margin. If your Yelp page is missing, unclaimed, or empty, the engine has less to verify you with. That said, Yelp's pull varies a lot by engine and by industry, so it is one input, not a shortcut.
What this means
AI engines do not know your business directly. They know what they can read and corroborate across the web, and for local questions they lean hard on a small set of review and directory sites. A Foundation Marketing and AirOps analysis of more than 28 million AI responses to local business queries found that Yelp was cited 512,680 times across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode in the fourth quarter of 2025 — 3.4 times more than the Better Business Bureau in second place, and more than BBB, Angi, Thumbtack, HomeAdvisor, and Nextdoor combined (Simmonds, 2026).
The practical translation: when an AI engine decides which handful of businesses to name in a local answer, a well-maintained Yelp page is frequently one of the documents it is reading. A missing or thin one removes a piece of evidence the engine would otherwise use.
Who this applies to
This matters most if customers find you through category and "near me" questions rather than by name. In the same study, 91–97% of Yelp citations came from category queries like "best plumber in Austin," and "near me" phrasing made up 17.5% of questions but drove 34.2% of Yelp citations (Simmonds, 2026). The industries where Yelp carried the most weight were personal care and beauty (24.1% of all Yelp citations tracked), restaurants, home services, and healthcare. If you run a med spa, dental office, salon, contractor, or restaurant in a competitive market, this is squarely about you. A B2B consultancy with no natural Yelp footprint is a different case.
How we'd evaluate it
We would start by asking the engines, not by looking at Yelp. Run five to ten realistic category questions for your service and city through Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and ChatGPT, and record which sources each answer links to. If Yelp pages show up repeatedly, and your competitors' Yelp pages are among them, that tells you where the gap is. Then we check your own page: is it claimed, is the category correct, are the hours and address identical to your website and Google Business Profile, are there recent reviews with responses, and are there photos. Each of those is something an engine can read and weigh.
Available options
- Claim and complete your free Yelp page. Correct category, matching name/address/phone, hours, service list, photos, and a short description that says plainly what you do and where. This is the minimum and it costs nothing.
- Build a real review base and respond to it. Ask satisfied customers to review you; reply to reviews, including negative ones. Do not buy reviews or offer incentives that violate Yelp's policies or the FTC's rules on fake and incentivized reviews.
- Treat Yelp as one node, not the whole strategy. Keep your Google Business Profile, website, and other directories consistent with it. AI engines reward information they can corroborate across sources.
Benefits, limitations, and tradeoffs
The upside is that a Yelp page is cheap, fast, and directly aligned with how two of the biggest AI engines currently source local answers. The limitations are real, though. The study's competitive set was six directories; Google Maps and TripAdvisor were not included, so it does not tell you Yelp beats every source, only that it beats those five. Yelp's advantage was concentrated on Google AI Mode (72.5% share of the set) and Perplexity (62.1%); on ChatGPT during Q4 2025, BBB led, with Yelp third, and on Gemini Yelp barely appeared (Simmonds, 2026). Citation patterns also move fast. Semrush's 13-week study of 230,000 prompts showed ChatGPT cutting its Reddit citations from roughly 60% of responses to about 10% in a matter of weeks in September 2025, with no equivalent drop on other engines (Harsel, 2025). Whatever is true about Yelp today can shift without notice.
What we know
Three findings anchor this. First, the citation data: Yelp accumulated 512,680 AI citations across four engines in Q4 2025, 3.4x the next platform, with the strongest concentration in "near me" and "best" queries (Simmonds, 2026). Second, the reason engines behave this way lines up with what consumers say they want. In a Morning Consult survey of 2,202 U.S. adults commissioned by Yelp, 65% had used an AI search tool in the past six months but only 15% trusted the results "a lot"; 57% use AI tools to find local businesses at least monthly, and 76% said it is important to see where the information comes from (Yelp, 2026). Engines that want to be trusted link to review-backed sources. Third, the relationship is now formal on at least one engine: in July 2026, Yelp began licensing its reviews, ratings, photos, and business details to OpenAI for use in ChatGPT's local answers, with Yelp branding and links, and its Request a Quote feature is coming to ChatGPT as well (Goodwin, 2026). That likely changes the Q4 2025 ChatGPT numbers above, in Yelp's favor.
Next steps
This week: search for your business on Yelp, claim the page if you have not, and fix anything that disagrees with your website or Google Business Profile. This month: ask your last ten happy customers for a review, respond to every review already there, and add current photos. Then re-run the AI engine questions from the evaluation step and note whether your page starts appearing among the sources. Track it monthly; this is a moving target.
Orlando considerations
Orlando's service categories are crowded — dozens of similar med spas, dental practices, HVAC companies, and restaurants within a few miles of each other — and tourism traffic means a large share of "near me" questions come from people with no prior knowledge of any of them. That is exactly the query type where the study found Yelp's influence highest. A Central Florida business with a complete, actively reviewed Yelp page has a concrete advantage over a similar one that never claimed its listing, because the engine has something to cite for one and nothing for the other.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to pay for Yelp ads to get cited by AI?
No. The citation studies count links to Yelp business pages in AI answers, and a free, claimed Yelp page is what gets linked. Yelp advertising affects placement inside Yelp's own search, not whether an AI engine cites your page. Focus on a complete listing and real reviews first.
Is Yelp more important than my Google Business Profile?
Not for Google's own products. Google AI Mode and AI Overviews draw heavily on Google-owned data, including your Business Profile. Yelp matters most on Perplexity and, as of mid-2026, on ChatGPT through its licensing deal. You need both; they feed different engines.
What if my Yelp reviews are bad or thin?
Then Yelp may work against you rather than for you. AI engines cite Yelp because of its review corpus, so a page with two old reviews and no photos gives the engine little to work with. Fix the listing, respond to reviews, and ask satisfied customers to leave one. Do not buy or fabricate reviews; that violates Yelp's policies and the FTC's rules.
My industry isn't on Yelp much. Does this still apply?
Less so. The data is strongest for home services, beauty, restaurants, and healthcare. For B2B or professional services with little Yelp presence, other review and directory sites may carry more weight. Check which sources actually appear when you ask AI engines about your category.
