Does my business need a Wikipedia page to show up in AI search?
No — and for most businesses, trying to force one into existence can backfire. But the question is worth taking seriously, because Wikipedia is ChatGPT's single most-cited source: it accounts for 7.8% of all ChatGPT citations and roughly 48% of citations among ChatGPT's top 10 sources (Profound, 2025). Perplexity, by contrast, barely cites it at all. Which engine your customers actually use should decide how much attention you give this.
What this means
AI answer engines don't treat every source the same way, and Wikipedia is the clearest example of that split. Profound's analysis of citation data from August 2024 through June 2025 found Wikipedia dominating ChatGPT's source mix in a way no other single domain does on any platform (Profound, 2025). On Google AI Mode and Perplexity, Wikipedia barely registers — those engines lean instead on Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn. That means "does Wikipedia matter for AI visibility" doesn't have one answer. It depends entirely on which engine you're asking about.
Who this applies to
This question mostly comes up from two kinds of businesses: notable enough that a neutral, independently-sourced Wikipedia entry is realistically achievable someday, and businesses that have been pitched a "guaranteed Wikipedia page" service and want to know if it's worth the money. Most small and mid-sized local businesses — the med spas, law firms, contractors, and dental practices AnswerFoundry typically works with — fall outside the first group. That's normal. Wikipedia notability standards are built around independent, in-depth press coverage, not around being a good local business.
How we'd evaluate it
Before recommending any effort toward Wikipedia, we'd check three things: whether your business already has independent press or trade-publication coverage that could support a neutral entry, which AI engines your actual customers use most (a quick multi-engine test answers this), and whether the citation sources that do carry weight on those engines — reviews, structured data, editorial mentions, category-specific directories — are in good shape. For most businesses, the second and third items matter more than the first.
Available options
- Do nothing about Wikipedia specifically. If your customers mostly use Perplexity, Google AI Mode, or Gemini for these queries, Wikipedia's overall citation share on those platforms is small enough that it isn't a priority use of time.
- Build toward eventual notability the legitimate way. Earn independent press, trade-publication features, and third-party recognition over time. That's also the only path Wikipedia's own volunteer editors treat as legitimate.
- Prioritize the sources you can control faster. Consistent business information across your site and Google Business Profile, structured data, and complete review-platform profiles move faster than anything Wikipedia-related and apply across every AI engine, not just one.
Benefits, limitations, and tradeoffs
If your business already qualifies for a Wikipedia entry and one exists, the upside is real: it's ChatGPT's most heavily weighted single source, and a well-maintained entry can anchor how the engine describes you. The limitation is that qualifying takes independent, third-party coverage most local businesses don't have and can't manufacture, and Wikipedia's editorial community reliably detects and reverts paid or promotional edits — so shortcuts tend to cost reputation rather than build it. The bigger tradeoff is opportunity cost: time spent chasing a Wikipedia page is time not spent on the citation sources that apply across every AI engine your customers might actually use.
What we know about Wikipedia and AI citations
Profound's citation-pattern research, covering roughly 680 million tracked citations from August 2024 to June 2025, found Wikipedia responsible for 7.8% of all ChatGPT citations — its single largest overall source — and 47.9% of citations within ChatGPT's top 10 sources specifically (Profound, 2025). On Google AI Overviews, Wikipedia's share of the top 10 drops to 5.7%; on Perplexity it's negligible, with Reddit taking 46.7% of the top-10 share instead (Profound, 2025).
A separate analysis of 30 million cited sources across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, reported by Search Engine Land, confirmed the same platform split: Reddit led overall, but "ChatGPT favored Wikipedia, Reddit, and editorial sites like Forbes," while Google's AI surfaces leaned toward Facebook and Yelp and Perplexity emphasized Reddit, LinkedIn, and G2 for B2B queries (Goodwin, 2026).
Contently's 2026 roundup of five separate citation studies also cautions against over-indexing on any single source: even the most-cited domain on a given platform "rarely exceeds 5 percent of total citations," and Wikipedia, Reddit, LinkedIn, and YouTube combined still make up less than 5% of overall citation volume once you look past each platform's top 10 (Contently, 2026). The practical read: Wikipedia is disproportionately influential where it appears, but it's one lever among many, and it's not the same lever on every AI engine.
Next steps
Run a quick check before spending any effort here: ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode or Gemini the kind of question your next customer would actually ask, and note which sources each engine leans on in its answer. If Wikipedia shows up in ChatGPT's answers for your category already, that's a signal worth watching. If it never appears, or if your customers mostly use engines where Wikipedia carries little weight, put the effort into the sources that move faster: business-information consistency, reviews, structured data, and earned editorial mentions.
Orlando considerations
Very few Central Florida local businesses — med spas, law firms, home services, dental practices — meet Wikipedia's independent-notability bar on their own, and that's true almost everywhere, not just Orlando. For most businesses in this market, the higher-leverage move is making sure Google Business Profile, on-site information, and review-platform profiles are consistent and current, since those signals carry weight across every AI engine, not just the one where Wikipedia happens to dominate.
Frequently asked questions
Should I just pay someone to write my business a Wikipedia page?
No. Wikipedia's volunteer editors actively look for and remove paid or conflict-of-interest pages, and a reverted page can do more reputational harm than having no page at all. The sustainable path is earning independent press and reference coverage first, which is what eventually makes a neutral, editor-written entry possible.
Does Wikipedia matter if my customers mostly use Perplexity or Google AI Mode?
Less so. Wikipedia accounts for roughly 48% of citations among ChatGPT's top 10 sources but a much smaller share on Google AI Mode and Perplexity, where Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn dominate instead. Which engine your customers actually use should drive where you spend effort.
What should a small local business do instead of chasing a Wikipedia page?
Focus on the sources that are realistically reachable: consistent business information across your website and Google Business Profile, coverage in local or trade press, complete profiles on the review platforms relevant to your category, and structured data that makes your site easy for AI systems to parse and verify.
How often do these citation patterns change?
Often enough that a single audit goes stale. Search Engine Land reported Reddit's ChatGPT citation share swinging from roughly 60% to about 10% of prompts in a matter of weeks in late 2025 after a platform change. Treat any citation-share statistic, including the ones in this article, as a snapshot rather than a permanent rule.

Not sure which AI engines your own customers are actually using, or what those engines cite when they answer a question about your category? An AI visibility audit maps exactly that, engine by engine.
