Do photos on my Google Business Profile affect AI recommendations?
Photos clearly help customers, but no source we found shows they change what AI tools recommend. Google's help pages present photos as a way to show what you offer and do not list them among the local ranking factors. A BrightLocal study found a link between photo counts and engagement, and its author says it does not prove cause.
What this means
Your Google Business Profile photos appear in Search and Maps, and Google's Gemini-based features draw on Maps data. Photos tell a customer what the place looks like before they arrive.
Google's Business Profile help says exterior photos help customers recognize your business, that photos should be in focus, well lit, and not heavily altered, and that they appear once the profile is verified (Google Business Profile Help, n.d.-a). Its local ranking page lists relevance, distance, and prominence, and presents photos as a way to show what you offer, not as a ranking factor (Google Business Profile Help, n.d.-b).
A BrightLocal study published through Search Engine Land found that businesses with more than 100 images had more engagement than the median, while those with one image fell below it. The author states this is correlation, not causation ("New Research," n.d.).
Who this applies to
Local businesses with a Google Business Profile: restaurants, clinics, salons, contractors, hotels, and shops.
How we'd evaluate it
We review the photo set for:
- Coverage. Exterior, interior, products or services, and team.
- Quality. In focus, well lit, and honest.
- Currency. Do photos match how the business looks now?
- Specs. JPG or PNG, 10 KB to 5 MB, 720 by 720 pixels recommended.
Available options
- Add real photos. Free. Upload exterior, interior, and work photos.
- Remove outdated ones. Old photos can mislead.
- Hire a photographer. Worth it for restaurants and hospitality.
- Skip stock images. Google asks that photos depict the business accurately.
Benefits, limitations, and tradeoffs
Photos cost time or money and show a clear customer benefit. The research on photo counts is correlational, so do not expect a set number of photos to change AI recommendations.
What we know
Google describes photos as customer-facing and lists relevance, distance, and prominence as local ranking factors (Google Business Profile Help, n.d.-a, n.d.-b). The BrightLocal data shows a link between photo counts and engagement without proving cause ("New Research," n.d.).
What we don't know: whether AI recommendation tools weigh photos. We have not seen any platform say so.
Next steps
Open your profile, check that exterior and interior photos exist and match today's reality, and add any missing categories. Read our article on whether your Business Profile affects AI recommendations for the bigger picture.
Orlando considerations
Orlando has many visitors choosing a place from a phone. A clear exterior photo and a few interior shots help them find you. Update photos after renovations or seasonal changes.
