Can AI search read text inside images on my website?
Sometimes, but not reliably. Microsoft says AI can sometimes read text in images, and that this often reduces accuracy. Google advises making important content available in text. Put prices, hours, and service lists in page text, and use images to support them.
What this means
Many small business sites put key information into graphics: a banner with a promotion, a flyer with prices, a hero image with the service list. People can read it. Machines may or may not.
Microsoft says AI can sometimes read text in images, but this "often reduces accuracy," and advises placing critical details in alt text or HTML (Madhavan, 2025). Google's AI features documentation recommends making sure important content is available in textual form (Google Search Central, 2025a).
Google's image guidance adds that alt text is the most important metadata for an image, and that Google uses the surrounding page content, including captions, to understand what an image shows. It also warns against stuffing alt text with keywords (Google Search Central, 2026).
Who this applies to
Businesses whose sites rely on designed banners, flyers, infographics, price sheets saved as images, or social-style graphics. Salons, restaurants, home services, and event businesses commonly do this.
How we'd evaluate it
We scan key pages for information that exists only as a picture:
- Prices and packages. Are they in text or in a graphic?
- Hours and contact details. Are they in the page, or on a banner?
- Promotions. Is the offer written out anywhere a parser can read?
- Alt text. Does each meaningful image have a short, accurate description?
Available options
- Rewrite graphics as text. Free. Put the words from the image into a heading and paragraph, and keep the image as decoration.
- Add accurate alt text. Describe what the image shows in a sentence, without keyword lists.
- Add captions where useful. Captions give nearby context that Google says it uses.
- Redesign banners. Use text over a background image, not text baked into the image file.
Benefits, limitations, and tradeoffs
Text on a page is less flexible than a designed graphic, and some brand looks depend on custom lettering. A reasonable compromise: keep lettering in logos and decorative art, but never rely on an image to carry facts a customer needs.
What we know
Microsoft says AI can sometimes read text in images but accuracy often drops (Madhavan, 2025). Google recommends important content in textual form (Google Search Central, 2025a) and calls alt text the most important image metadata (Google Search Central, 2026).
What we don't know: how well any specific AI product reads text in an image today. The documents describe the risk; they do not publish accuracy rates. Google's image guidance does not directly address text embedded in images, so we do not claim it does.
Next steps
Walk through your top five pages and note every fact that lives only in an image. Rewrite each as page text under a heading. Then add short, accurate alt text to the images that remain.
Orlando considerations
Orlando businesses often run seasonal promotions, theme-week specials, and visitor packages as image banners. Those are easy to miss for both machines and people using screen readers. Put the offer, dates, and price in the page text.
Frequently asked questions
Will AI read my price list if it is an image?
It might, but accuracy often drops, according to Microsoft. Put the prices in page text so there is no guesswork.
Is alt text enough?
Alt text helps, and Google calls it the most important image metadata. For facts customers rely on, visible page text is better than alt text alone.
Should I stop using graphics?
No. Use them for design. Just do not make them the only place a key fact appears.
Can I write long alt text?
Keep it short and accurate. Google warns against filling alt attributes with keywords.
